Hard hats are a vital part of PPE and a proven means of saving lives in the workplace.
Did you know that the earliest hard hats were made by shipyard workers to protect themselves from objects falling from the upper decks? The workers simply covered an ordinary hat with tar and left them to harden in the sun! Since then, hardhats have been made from aluminium, fibreglass and ABS (the same material as Lego!) before eventually being made from the HDPE as they are today.
On a more serious note, hard hats are a vital part of PPE and a proven means of saving lives in the workplace. Shockingly, on average people are prepared to spend around £30 on a pair of safety boots, but only £8 on a safety helmet. Head protection represents just 3% of PPE purchases but accounts for over 20% of injuries. It’s crazy - but true!
This June, Headway and Centurion Safety Products are teaming up to raise awareness of using hard hats while on site, how they should be maintained and the life saving protection they provide.
